On January 13, 2025, US fertilizer giant Mosaic (NYSE: MOS) announced the sale of its phosphate mine and tailings dams in Patos de Minas, Brazil, to Fosfatados Centro for $125 million, payable over six years. This transaction aligns with Mosaic’s strategy to divest non-core assets and focus on higher-return investments. The deal also supports the National Fertilizer Plan, with Fosfatados Centro aiming to enhance phosphate supply for Brazil\u2019s agricultural market. Mosaic Fertilizantes, the S\u00e3o Paulo-based subsidiary, oversees the company’s operations in South America, including 26 production and blending facilities across Brazil, Paraguay, and Peru, with a blending capacity of 8.6 million tonnes annually.<\/p>\n

The decision comes as global potash prices stabilise, following increased shipments from Russia and Belarus, which circumvented sanctions by targeting markets in Asia and South America. Mosaic, the world\u2019s fourth-largest potash producer, emphasised that the sale is part of a broader effort to optimise its portfolio amid changing market dynamics. This move marks a strategic shift in the company’s operations while contributing to the recovery of global fertilizer supply chains.<\/p>\n
