The UN-affiliated International Seabed Authority (ISA) kicked off the second part of its 28th session on 10 July in Jamaica to further discuss the draft regulations for the exploitation of mineral resources in the Area. Although ISA\u2019s regulations are yet to be finalised, several multinational firms and governments have already lodged deep-sea mining permit applications, exploiting a rule that requires the ISA to consider and provisionally approve applications within two years. Meanwhile, some governments and environmentalists are calling for a hold on all deep-sea mining until more in-depth research has been conducted on its potential impact.<\/p>\n\n
