Anglo American is set to demerge its South African coal assets as a result of increased investor pressure in respect of these polluting resources. Anglo American plans to transfer its South African thermal coal assets into a new company called Thungela which is set to list on the Johannesburg and London Stock Exchanges.
Mining companies are coming under increasing pressure from investors to divest from coal as a result of coal’s contribution to climate change.
