With ESG gaining prominence globally, combined with climate change and loss of biodiversity, there is an increasing demand for innovation to address these problems. This demand for innovation has resulted in more work for patent law firms. There has over the last decade been a steady increase in patent filings which are related to environmental and climate change goals. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, patents filed in the renewable energy sector in 2019 was 3.2 higher than the number filed in 2002.
