Mexico Chamber Of Mines Warns The Strike At Peñasquito Could Impede The Country’s Mining Sector
The ongoing strike of Newmont’s Peñasquito gold-silver operation is posing significant risks to Mexico’s fragile mining sector, warned the country’s Chamber of Mines. Around 2,000 unionised workers have halted operations since 8 June, contesting profit-sharing agreements and alleged contract infringements. The strike has compelled Newmont to declare force majeure on deliveries of some metal products from the country’s biggest mine in Zacatecas state. The strike is the third labour conflict at the site since Newmont’s acquisition of the mine in 2019.
