Rio Tinto, the world’s largest iron ore producer, and China Baowu Steel Group, the world’s leading steelmaker, have entered a partnership to implement a series of initiatives aimed at decarbonising the steel value chain in China and Australia. As part of this collaboration, they will develop a pilot-scale electric melter at a Baowu-owned steel mill in China, optimise pelletisation technology for Australian ores, and further develop China Baowu’s HyCROF technology that lowers CO₂ emissions in the blast furnace process. They will also explore low-carbon iron production opportunities in Western Australia.
