In a move towards lithium industry nationalization, Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has issued the details of the national lithium strategy, including its objective, schedule and expected objective. The plan involves the state forming strategic partnerships with the businesses and the establishment of a national lithium company (ENAL), cementing Chile’s place as the world’s second-largest battery metal producer. Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, and the national mining company Enami will be granted lithium exploration and exploitation permits, specifically for salt flats where projects are already in progress. Starting from 2024, private businesses can bid for lithium exploration rights, with those conducting exploration work given priority for a joint exploitation license with a state entity.
