Rethinking Natural Gas: Study Reveals Earlier Shift From Gas To Electricity May Be Feasible

Researchers at the Technical University of Munich have devised a new calculation model showing that the use of natural gas for heating and cooking may have a greater climate impact than previously thought. Having taken into account the amount of escaped natural gas and the proportion of renewable energy sources in the power mix, the calculation model could provide a quantitative basis for determining the countries where electricity becomes a greener alternative. The study reveals that the shift is viable for countries with high renewable power share like Canada. Although nations like Germany have a growing renewable share, electricity is not yet the greener choice.
