Bolivia has entered into $1.4 billion worth of lithium development contracts with Russian state nuclear firm Rosatom and China’s Citic Guoan Group to develop its vast, untapped lithium reserves. According to the country’s Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy Franklin Molina, it is estimated that Bolivia will be able to produce about 100,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate in 2025 in the Uyuni, Coipasa and Pasto Grandes salt flats. The deal involves the construction of two direct lithium extraction processing plants, projected to generate about 45,000 tons of lithium carbonate annually. Rosatom has invested $600 million in the project, marking its first large-scale lithium project overseas. Citic Guoan has also committed to investing $857 million in the deal.
