Chile’s state-owned copper producer, Codelco, has filed a request for an environmental permit to extend the operational lifespan of its Ministro Hales mine with an investment of $2.5 billion. This request indicates a potential extension of the mine’s operations by 30 years without changing the current production process. The project’s goal is to increase the mine’s copper concentrate production capacity from 700,000 metric tons per year to 830,000 tons, and elevate the mineral processing rate from annual average of 57,000 tons to 65,000 a day.
