Deep-Sea Mining On Hold Until 2024, UN Watchdog Decides

The International Seabed Authority (ISA), a UN-affiliated regulator, has decided to postpone granting permission to deep-sea mining for metals until 2024 at the earliest. The decision came after a meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, where delegates were unable to agree on industry regulations. While immediate mining has been ruled out, a “two-year rule” loophole could allow mining applications to be provisionally approved two years after submission. Critics call for further research into the industry and its environmental impact. The upcoming ISA meeting in November 2023 is anticipated to resolve the existing regulatory uncertainties.
