Financing floating solar projects in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia has proven its ability to install large-scale floating photovoltaic (PV) power plants on water bodies. Daniel Mallo, head of natural resources and infrastructure, Asia Pacific, at Société Générale, believed that these assets are readily financeable. Banks like Société Générale have provided financing last year to Chenya Energy to support the developer in its construction of a 181MWp offshore floating project in Taiwan. A study published in 2020 by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis revealed that the market potential for floating PV in the ASEAN market is at least 24GW. The study showed that there is a particularly promising outlook for floating PV power plants in the Philippines and Thailand.
