Facing permit delays, labour shortages and global inflation, lithium suppliers are grappling with challenges that threaten electric vehicle battery production. Lake Resources and other lithium companies have announced production delays, while Albemarle, the world’s largest lithium producer, predicts supply will fall 500,000 tonnes short of demand by 2030. The industry also faces an additional strain in refining the metal into battery-grade materials, potentially compromising battery quality. Meanwhile, lithium industry expansion has been faced with local opposition, further exacerbating the supply shortages.
