Rio Tinto To Build Canada’s Largest Solar Plant For Its Diamond Mine

Rio Tinto announced plans to establish Canada’s largest solar power plant, aimed at powering its Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories. The plant, with more than 6,600 solar panels, is designed to produce about 4,200 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. The plant is projected to cover a quarter of Diavik’s power needs during closure work. These panels will generate energy from direct sunlight and light reflected from snow. The initiative will reduce the mine’s diesel usage by around one million litres annually. Supported by C$3.9 million in government grants, the plant is expected to be fully operational in the first half of 2024. This move aligns with Rio Tinto’s objective to halve its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.
